The majority of buildings at Thule Air Base were built in 1952. Not many buildings have been added since then. Actually a large number of facilities have been demolished over the years as the number of employees has decreased.
Dormitories
The majority of GC employees are accommodated in dormitories with a maximum of 13 residents. Each person has his/her own furnished room. In each barrack, or "flat top", there are shared shower and toilet facilities, shared kitchen, dining, and day rooms. Newcomers could expect to be accommodated in such a room.
Other barracks are divided into small apartments which consist of 1½ rooms each - typically a living room and a small bedroom. A kitchen, dining room, day room, and shower and toilet facilities are shared with the other residents.
Couples
For couples, suites are available in specially designed barracks, including a living room, bedroom, kitchen, and bathroom. Another option for couples is a "couples' barrack". Typically each couples' barrack has room for 6 couples.
Each couple would be provided their own living room, bedroom, and bathroom, and the kitchen and dining room is shared with the other residents.
Contingency Barracks
On some occasions, for short term stays at Thule Air Base, contingency barracks are used. These barracks are generally not in use and only put into use when it is peak season (usually in the summer months) and all other accommodations are occupied.
Hotel
A full service hotel is available for non-resident visits.
Your Personal Touch
GC employees are encouraged to arrange and decorate their room to make them feel more comfortable.
Newcomers are able to bring along extra airfreight luggage on their first direct charter from Copenhagen. Many times this benefit is utilized for bringing things that will give their new environment a personal touch.
