Greenland Contractors - a history

In 1952, the contracting companies Christiani & Nielsen A/S, Højgaard & Schultz a/s, A. Jespersen & Søn A/S, Kampmann, Kierulff & Saxild A/S, Monberg & Thorsen A/S and Saabye & Lerche A/S joined together to establish Danish Arctic Contractors I/S (DAC) primarily to undertake construction activities at Sondrestrom Air Base as well as Thule Air Base in Greenland.

After the construction of the bases, DAC submitted bids to the service, operations and maintenance contracts in the Danish/American defense areas in Greenland.

The first contract DAC undertook in Greenland was the construction of six buildings for the American base in Narsarsuaq in 1952.

In 1961, DAC won the first major service contract on "Food Service" and "Transportation" at Sondrestrom Air Base. Subsequently, the scope of the contract was extended and DAC/GC continued to carry out the service contract until the base was handed over to the Greenland Home Rule in October 1992.

In 1971, DAC won the tender of the service contract at the Thule Air Base and since then DAC/GC has won all service contracts at Thule Air Base - recently with the entering of a 10 year contract as of 1 October 2005.

Greenlandic joint ownership

Greenland Home Rule joined the company in 1985 when Greenland Resources A/S and the six DAC companies established Greenland Contractors I/S (GC). The new company's task was to carry out service and maintenance contracts at the US Air Force's bases in Greenland.

Greenland Resources A/S has played an important role in encouraging the employment and training of Greenlandic employees in the company.

Today, GC has two owners: Inuit Service Company (former Greenland Resources A/S) and MT Højgaard a/s.
